When you talk about Colorado, the first thing that comes to most people’s minds is the northern part of the state and its famous mountains. They think about the cold, the snow and the skiing. Seldom does Cripple Creek, Alamosa, Cortez or Buena Vista ever get mentioned. But Southern Colorado has a lot to offer including four glorious seasons with an average temperature of 62 degrees!
Colorado is a big state. The fact is that you can drive for 6 to 8 hours in one direction and never reach the border. There’s a mystery on what part of the state is actually considered “southern”, since, for example, a map shows Colorado Springs to be centrally located when it is actually counted as the largest of Southern Colorado’s cities. In searching for the answer to what makes a classification of a northern versus central versus southern Colorado city, City-Data.com came to the rescue:
“ Colorado Springs sits south of the Palmer Divide. It is part of the Arkansas River drainage (Fountain Creek, which passes through Colorado Springs, drains into the Arkansas River), while Denver is part of the South Platte River drainage. Traditionally, the lower Arkansas River drainage is considered part of southern Colorado, the South Platte drainage as part of northern Colorado. Also, the vegetation found from the Palmer Divide south, as well as the general climate, has more in common with southern Colorado than with northern Colorado. “Southern” and “Northern” is more than just an arbitrary dividing point on a map–one has to look at the natural geographic boundaries.” So there it is…mystery solved.
Southern Colorado is less populous than the Northern Colorado area, largely due to Denver and it’s surrounding suburbs like Aurora, Lakewood and Arvada. The biggest city in Southern Colorado is Colorado Springs (as we mentioned previously) with right around a half of million residents. Colorado Springs has a heavy military presence and is home to the Air Force Academy, NORAD, Fort Carson and Peterson Air Force Base. But it is also the location of the Olympic Training center and several educational facilities. Colorado Springs lies near the renown Pikes Peak, but this Southern Colorado city’s claim to fame is the Garden of the Gods natural red rock formations.
How Do You Get to Southern Colorado
Heading south of Colorado Springs you will find Monument. Going further down the road on the north-south running I-25 you’ll drive through Pueblo, Trinidad and on into Northern New Mexico over Raton Pass. Interstate 70 runs 2,100 miles across the United States and divides the entire state of Colorado from east to west.

When you ask what you can do while in Southern Colorado, you better have a lot of time and be pretty good at making a decision because your opportunity for adventure looms large. Southern Colorado is home to three of the state’s four national parks. The iconic peak on those Coors beer cans is the San Juan mountain range – also in Southern Colorado. Southern Colorado has the Great Sand Dunes, and you might not have known this; Southern Colorado’s climate is actually classified as a desert (an alpine desert, to be exact), so you’re in for a year-round, mild climate that averages 300 days of blue-bird skies, with sunshine and low humidity. Pagosa Springs offers hot springs with legendary healing waters. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in in Southwestern Colorado and so is Four Corners National Monument Four Corners is a place where you can stand in four states at once (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado (A little trivial, yes…but kinda cool, too!) Mesa Verde has well preserved Native American petroglyphs, cliff dwellings and archeological sites. Santa Claus has a village in Colorado Springs and both Colorado Springs and Pueblo have great zoos. New owners took over May of 2020 and the reviews are glowing. Located at 9200 feet above sea level, this small, quiet campground is only 25 minutes from I-25. All RV sites are gravel and grass and provide standard hook ups including water and electric (30 amp). All but 5 sites also have sewer hookups. There’s plenty to keep you busy including horseshoes, cornhole and ladder ball. Cell service is iffy but the lodge has Wifi. There’s a shower house on site. Pets welcome on leash, but there’s also an off-leash dog park. Both secluded and closer-in sites available. Cabins and outfitter tents are available for rental. Gathering area, gazebo and lodge can accommodate large groups for any occasion. And, best of all, there’s no mountain passes that you have to travel over to get here!

The Rock Pond trailhead begins there too and connects to the Wapiti Nature Trail; a short, family-friendly hike. Trial maps are available at the Visitors Center.
